Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID)

AECID is the main agency in charge of managing Spanish cooperation, under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Its mission is to promote sustainable human development and contribute to the eradication of poverty in developing countries, in line with the principles of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Created in 1988 and headquartered in Madrid, its scope of action covers Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where it deploys programs and initiatives in several key areas. Its work focuses on promoting sustainable development, poverty reduction, humanitarian action and crisis response, as well as the defense of human rights, democracy and gender equality. It also promotes culture and education as drivers of development and fosters scientific and technical cooperation. To carry out its objectives, the AECID has various tools at its disposal, including calls for grants aimed at non-governmental organizations, universities and other entities; bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements with organizations such as the UN and the European Union; a network of Spanish Cultural Centers in different countries for cultural and educational dissemination; the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation, which promotes access to drinking water in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Technical Cooperation Offices, responsible for implementing projects in the field. Through these initiatives, the AECID reinforces Spain’s commitment to international cooperation, supporting inclusive and sustainable development that contributes to betterment of living conditions in the most vulnerable communities.
